National library kolkata

project overview

Belvedere House is an 18th-century mansion in Kolkata's Alipore Estate, originally serving as the official residence for successive Governor-Generals and Viceroys of India. After independence, it became home to the National Library of India, now under the Ministry of Culture. In 2010, the Ministry decided to have the building conserved under the Archaeological Survey of India, and Design Consortium was appointed for the project. The team carried out full historical documentation of the building brick by brick, conserving, restoring, and repairing it in collaboration with ASI, following all norms of heritage conservation. Once restored, the West Bengal government held several international conventions and expositions in the building, which today houses 9 state-of-the-art, interactive art galleries as an immersive museum of words, Shabdalok. The National Library Kolkata also received the IIA Award and Hudco Award.
